How often should an older dog see the vet?

The American Animal Hospital Association suggests a check-up every six months for dogs over 7.

Size changes when 'older' starts

VCA Animal Hospitals notes that dogs age at different speeds, and that older dogs should be examined at least twice a year.

  • Giant breeds: senior from about 5 to 6 years.
  • Small breeds: senior from about 10 to 12 years.

What the vet looks for

  • Joints (osteoarthritis) and weight.
  • Teeth.
  • Kidneys, liver and heart.
  • Changes in thinking and behaviour.

What to bring

  • A note of anything new: slower to get up, shorter walks, stairs, restless nights.
  • What he eats, and how much.
  • Any change in drinking or peeing.
