How often should an older cat see the vet?

The American Association of Feline Practitioners counts cats over 10 as senior, and some cats from about 8. Its guidelines set how often an older cat should have a check-up.

By age

  • 10 to 15 years: at least every 6 months.
  • Over 15 years: every 4 months.

Before 10

The AVMA's summary of the same guidelines says at least once a year from about 7 to 10.

Why so often

Many changes in older cats are slow and quiet. Kidney changes, for example, are common after 10, and regular blood tests are how they are found.

What to bring

  • A note of anything new: jumping less, sleeping more, grooming less, drinking more.
  • What she eats, and how much.
  • Any change in the litter tray.
